Despair is often rooted in a mismatch between expectations and reality. We despair when reality does not “fall into place”.
While we can try to manage our expectations in every situation and case to ensure that they better align with reality, the truth is that it is too hard to maintain.
It has long been shared by elders in various societies that life is a journey of ups and downs. A good day, a bad day. A happy moment, a sad moment. A challenge, an ease. And so forth.
So if our expectation is inline with this reality about life, we could keep despair in check knowing that difficult times will not last forever, and while good times are to be celebrated, they also will not last forever and our job is to maneuver both with the mantra to,
