For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. – Nelson Mandela
I have often found the subject of freedom puzzling and confusing. However, I recently started to think that, maybe I should look at what it isn’t.
What it isn’t, isn’t the lack of respect for others. What it isn’t, isn’t the ability to do as one wishes without thinking of the consequences on both self and others. What it definitely isn’t, isn’t doing as one wishes while hurting others both individuals and more importantly, society and its own sustainable future.
Those who see individuals as independent components of society that come together in a singular fashion are over-simplifying the world view. The truth is, we all get affected by other people’s actions and words and likewise, our own actions affect others, and with disregard for others, much damage can be done.
May this special month give us the blessing of foresight and thought … not seeking acceptance or recognition from others, but seeking patience and ability to see how one’s own actions may impact the self and others.
