You do things when the opportunities come along. I’ve had periods in my life when I’ve had a bundle of ideas come along, and I’ve had long dry spells. If I get an idea next week, I’ll do something. If not, I won’t do a damn thing. – Warren Buffett
Today, we are talking about opportunities, do they knock or do we create them? The quote above by Warren Buffet is something, that upon reflection during this blessed month, we have come to believe is more true than initially thought.
Thinking back, most of our key decisions, moves and events have come our way and we may not be able to take credit for creating them. Some may challenge that and say that it was “their hard work that created a new job opportunity” and we say, really? Think about it, hard work is preparation for when an opportunity, such as a new job knocks. It actually could have been a business opportunity or simply, nothing. The knocking in fact may be as subtle as a thought from a close friend … or a need requested by a client … or a deliverable requested by a boss … or even a job that was advertised.
In fact, when we look back, it was the times that we tried to build doors, whether in opening a business or making certain decisions, that we did not ‘see’, appreciate and act upon true opportunities and it was in times that we tried to build doors that we found action to be difficult with no real advancement.
This may seem obvious to some but to us, this brought clarity on our special journey this month in that, maybe one should embrace what they have TODAY; strengths, abilities and state of life more generally, and excel at what they have in hand, observing and looking out for signs of opportunities that come knocking without the worry of what tomorrow may bring…all we truly have is, today.
